What is an IVA

The IVA stands for Income Insurance for Fully and Permanently Disabled Employees, or IVA for short. Normally, an employee can only claim WIA benefit after two years of illness. An employee is entitled to IVA benefit if the employee is completely and permanently disabled after the waiting period of 104 weeks and can earn less than 20% of the former salary.

Applying for early IVA

With an early WIA claim, you make an earlier claim for the so-called early IVA benefit.

Why and how to apply for early IVA?

An early IVA can be applied for if the employee has been ill for at least 3 weeks and before the employee has been ill for 68 weeks. Because the early IVA can always only be granted 10 weeks after the application, the IVA benefit will start at the earliest from the 13th week and at the latest in the 78th week of illness. An early WIA benefit may only be applied for once by an employee before the employee has been ill for 68 weeks if the company doctor has declared that the employee can no longer work and will not get better. Careful coordination between the time of application and contact with the occupational health and safety service is important in this regard. The employee must submit the early IVA application himself, which can be done via the UWV website using the DigiD. You can imagine that there are often medically serious situations in which, in addition to practical questions, all kinds of emotions also play a role. An application for early IVA also means that there are no longer any work possibilities.

The benefits

Granting early IVA benefits has benefits for both the employer and the employee.

Benefits employer:

  • The employee receives an IVA benefit equal to 75% of his or her last-earned salary. As the employer, you may offset this benefit against the wages that you yourself must continue to pay during illness;
  • There is no more reintegration obligation. No more (additional) interventions to be deployed and paid for, and no more guidance from the occupational health and safety service;
  • Are you self-insured for the WGA? An early IVA will be converted to an IVA when the 2 years of absenteeism is completed. This means no loss for the self-insurer;
  • Are you not self-insured for the WGA? Then this allocation IVA will not adversely affect premiums you pay to the UWV.

Employee benefits:

  • Does the employer normally continue to pay 70% of wages in the second year of illness? With an early IVA award, the total income is 75%;
  • There is no longer a reintegration obligation. Therefore, there are no more mandatory agreements with the occupational health and safety service or other additional interventions;
  • There is clarity about income after the second year of illness. The IVA benefit runs, if the medical situation remains unchanged, until the state pension age. In principle, there will be no reassessment/re-examination. The WIA application will not have to be made again. If an early IVA is granted, an employee will continue to receive the highest possible benefit after two years, namely 75% of the maximized daily wage. If an employee has been awarded an early IVA, the employee will also have clarity about their financial situation.
