On Thursday, April 16, Resolu hosted an inspiring workshop in Nieuwegein on coping with grief and loss. Colleagues from other labels within paraDIGMA groep also paraDIGMA groep , resulting in a full room of dedicated professionals.
Manu Keirse
The session was led by Manu Keirse, professor emeritus of grief counseling, physician (KU Leuven), and clinical psychologist. With his impressive expertise and engaging presentation style, he moved the audience and inspired them to reflect. During the meeting, there was ample opportunity to ask questions, share experiences, and explore this important and often underestimated topic in greater depth together.
Loss is more widespread than we often realize
When we think of loss, we often immediately think of the death of a loved one. But loss takes many other forms. Think of a relationship ending, falling ill and having to give up things that were once taken for granted, or losing a job.
At Resolu, we support people who have not only lost their jobs but are also dealing with illness. This means they often experience multiple forms of loss at the same time and are therefore going through a grieving process. That is precisely why this knowledge session aligned perfectly with our work. Manu Keirse’s insights confirmed how important it is not to underestimate loss in the context of absenteeism, recovery, and return to work.
What does a person need during a time of loss?
It often starts with something that seems simple: listening.
Behind behavior often lies grief. And everyone deals with it in their own way. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to grief and loss. However, there is a clear need for space, attention, and closeness.
Employers have an important role to play here. It is essential to ensure that someone can return to work safely. Help them find their footing again by offering flexibility. Consider, for example, the option of taking extra breaks when needed—perhaps together with colleagues—a first day on the job where they are supported by a colleague, or a gradual return to work rather than having to function immediately under high pressure and tight deadlines..
Grief doesn't end when you return to work
All too often, we still see people returning to work while the grieving process is still in full swing. But grief doesn’t stop the moment someone returns to the workplace. If this isn’t given enough attention, it can lead to further absences and sometimes even longer-term leave.
It is important to note that by offering attention, understanding, and flexibility during this phase, you as an employer can not only reduce absenteeism but, more importantly, help foster a sense of security and support.
The role of Resolu
At Resolu, we see every day how loss affects resilience, recovery, and employability. Especially when illness, job loss, and personal circumstances all come together, effective support is essential.
Our case managers support employers and employees with issues related to absenteeism, recovery, and return-to-work. In doing so, we focus not only on laws, regulations, and procedures, but also on the human aspect. After all, sustainable solutions can only truly emerge when we take the time to understand what someone is going through.
