It’s Anti-Bullying Week. When we think of bullying, we often think of children: the schoolyard, being excluded, and being mean to one another. But unfortunately, bullying doesn’t stop once we become adults. Bullying also occurs in the workplace.
Bullying in the Workplace
In 2024, 6% of employees reported having been bullied at work in the past year. This is according to the 2024 National Survey on Working Conditions (NEA) conducted by TNO and Statistics Netherlands (CBS). These are employees who themselves reported having experienced bullying.
Behind this percentage are people who go to work every day and don’t feel comfortable or safe there. People who don’t feel welcome, who are excluded or ignored. Who have to put up with the same “jokes” over and over again or know that people are gossiping about them as soon as they leave the room. That can have serious consequences.
The Impact of Bullying
Bullying can have a huge impact on a person. Mental resilience isn’t determined solely by what happens in your personal life or how you cope with stress. Your work environment also plays a major role. How safe do you feel at work?
Detected too late
That is why prevention is incredibly important. Employers have a key role to play here. Make sure employees know where to turn for help. Create an environment where inappropriate behavior can be discussed openly, and ensure that managers can recognize the warning signs and know what to do. And don’t wait until someone calls in sick before taking action.
Don't let it get too late
By the time an employee has reached the point where they no longer want to come to work, it may already be too late. This can lead to a prolonged absence process, involving meetings, counseling, and various interventions. This has consequences for both the employee and the organization.
You might also ask yourself: Could we have seen this coming sooner? Could we have had this conversation earlier? Workplace bullying isn’t just a problem among children. It’s an issue for which coworkers, managers, and employers share responsibility.
Just how safe is your workplace, really?
